Written by Kathleen Eldredge

Classic AranSize

Small (4-5 yr); Medium (6-7 yr); Large (8-9 yr)

This pattern is for an oversized sweater. Because of the oversized style, this sweater can be worn over a longer growth period. If you want a closer fit, drop down one size. (i.e. for a closer fit size Large, use the instructions for size Medium). This is a tunic length sweater with fold up sleeve cuffs, thus it will still be long enough

Gauge

22 stitches and 32 rows – 4” (10cm) in double knit

Throughout this pattern you will be instructed to “work” a section. In Double Knitting, this terms means knitting the front stitch of a pair and purling the back stitch of a pair. The result is a stockinette surface on both sides of your outer fabric. I find it much easier to use the term “work”, rather than continuously explaining how to work a pair of stitches ( one DSP), with all the details of yarn placement, etc.

Knitting Instructions

Technical Note:

Whenever you are working a purl on the front side or a knit on the back side in a different color, knit the stitch to be purled on the front side and purl the stitch to be knitted on the back side on the color change round. In the following rounds follow the instructions as stated.

Starting a new skein or changing:

Temporarily tie the two ends together. On the next round, separate the ends and using a tapestry needle, weave the ends in a few stitches on the inside. Leave the remaining tail on the outside and later, using a crochet hook or tapestry needle, pull the tails to the inside and hide them in the air pockets.

Double Knitting

Double Knitting creates a reversible, two-layer fabric; both sides show only knit stitches (each side looks as if it was worked in stockinette). The purl sides of both layers are hidden inside.

When working a two-color design in Double Knitting, the two layers are intertwined. There are no strands across the back of the fabric. All ends can be tucked in to the “air pocket” between the two layers. Double Knitting is a marvelous solution to the headaches of stranding or working in many ends that torment quite a few knitters.

Hold 1 color yarn in each hand (If you are more proficient holding both colors in one hand, this method will also work). With both yarns held in back, knit the front (side A) stitch; then, with both yarns held in front, purl the back (side B) stitch. This produces a multicolored stockinette surface on both sides A and B.

To work a purl DSP on sides A & B, hold side A yarn in front and side B yarn to the back and purl the side A stitch; then, hold side A yarn in front and side B yarn to the back and knit the back stitch of the pair. Remember not to have purl stitches on the outside surfaces of your fabric on a color change round.

When the front and back yokes are separated for the sleeves, work an OES (Open Edge Stitch), double knit to the end of the row, including the last pair; do not change colors on the edge stitches, and make sure that you do NOT twist the 2 colors when you turn your work. This will leave the end of the yoke rows open so you can later pick up stitches for the sleeves.

Increasing in Double Knit

To work and increase in double knit, use the M1 increase method, holding both yarns in back for the A side and holding both yarns in front to purl the lifted stitch for the B side.

Decreasing in Double Knit

Slip the 1st front stitch to the right needle, slip the 1st back stitch to a cable needle, slip the next front stitch to the right needle, return the back stitch on the cable needle to the left needle, then return both front stitches to the left needle (You now have 2 front stitches together and 2 back stitches together on the left needle). With byb perform k2tog or ssk as you normally would on the 2 front stitches next to each other, then reverse the decrease for the 2 back stitches (byf p2tog or ssp)

Throughout the pattern DSP (Double Stitch Pairs) will be treated as one stitch (both for reading charts and counting).

I have gained all my knowledge of Double Knitting from Royce’s primer published years ago and M’ Lou Baber’s new book, both published by Schoolhouse Press, followed by a lot of experimentation. So many thanks to both these talents for their instruction in this wonderful knitting style.

Two-Color Cable Edge Cast-on for Double Knitting:

Using 2 strands of each color (4 strands total) perform a Cable Edge Cast-on as follows:

Make a starting loop with 2 stands of color B. Insert the right-hand needle, from front to back through the starting loop; wrap 2 strands of color A around the right-hand needle and pull 2 loops through. Place these loops on the left-hand needle turning them so they lie in the correct position. There are now 2 pairs of stitches on the left-hand needle.

*Pick up the color B strands of yarn from the back of the left-hand needle and insert the right-hand needle between the 2 pair of stitches on the left-hand needle (between the color B pair and the color A pair). Wrap 2 strands of color B around the needle and pull a double loop through. Place this dbl loop on the left-hand needle as before. Pick up the color A strands of yarn from the back of the left-hand needle and insert the right-hand needle between the two last pair of stitches on the left-hand needle (between the color A pair and the color B pair). Wrap 2 strands of color A around the needle and pull a dbl loop through. Place this dbl loop on the left-hand needle as before. Repeat from * until you have the total number of stitches (pairs), including the starting loop. Cut 1 strand of each color leaving a tail to weave in (this leaves 1 strand of each color). Make sure you alternate the colors on every stitch pair, always bringing the yarn from behind and in front of the prior color. This will give the edge of your work a very professional look.

Set up for 2-sided Double Knit Ribbing:

Connect cast on edge into a circle as you normally would, making sure not to twist. The double loops of each cast on stitch will be separated and worked individually, matching the color of the loop to the new stitch. The result will be a pair of stitches (one knit, one purl) in color B followed by a pair of stitches (one purl, one knit) in color A.

In 1st loop of starting pair with color B, byb (both strands in back) knit front stitch. In 2nd loop of starting pair byf (both strands in front) purl back stitch. With your color A strand in front and color B strand in back, purl the 1st loop of the next pair. With color A strand in back and color B strand in front, knit the 2nd loop of the same pair.

* In 1st loop of the next B pair with color B, byb (both strands in back) knit front stitch. In 2nd loop of the same pair, byf (both strands in front) purl back stitch. With color A strand in front and color B strand in back, purl the 1st loop of the next pair. With color A strand in back and color B strand in front, knit the 2nd loop of the same pair. Repeat from * until you have completed the round. pm for beginning of round.

2-sided Double Knit Ribbing:

In front stitch of the 1st pair, with color B, byb (both strands in back) knit. In 2nd stitch byf (both strands in front) purl back stitch. With color A strand in front and color B strand in back, purl the 1st stitch of the next pair. With color A strand in back and color B strand in front, knit the 2nd stitch of the same pair.

* In front stitch of the next B pair with color B, byb knit. In 2nd loop of the same pair, byf purl back stitch. With color A strand in front and color B strand in back, purl the 1st stitch of the next pair. With color A strand in back and color B strand in front, knit the 2nd stitch of the same pair. Repeat from * until you have completed the round.

Double Knit side seams:

In front stitch with A or C in front and B or D in back, purl front stitch

In back stitch with A or C in front and B or D in back, knit back stitch

On next round, alternate colors (purl with B or D in front stitch, knit with A or C in back stitch)

Repeat these 2 rounds until starting underarm gussets.

Double Knit Cables:

C6B - slip 3 DSP to cable needle and hold behind, work 3 DSP (knit front stitch with color A or C, purl back stitch with color B or D, work 3 DSP from cable needle the same way.

C6F - slip 3 DSP to cable needle and hold in front, work 3 DSP (knit front stitch with color A or C, purl back stitch with color B or D, work 3 DSP from cable needle the same way.

Children can enjoy wearing two different color schemes with all kinds of graphics. You can choose your own, as

long as it will fit the area for the design. My grandson can’t wait to have the Harry Potter lion (in great detail)

smack in the middle of his sweater with all kinds of other color splashes throughout.
