WHAT YOU NEED

 

Yarn

Bulky by Blue Sky Alpacas,

31⁄2oz/100g hanks, each

approx 45yd/41m (alpaca/wool)

  • 5 hanks in #1218 azalea

 

Needles

  • One size 13 (9mm) circular

needle, 16"/40cm long

or size to obtain gauge

  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle
  • Three 11⁄2"/38mm buttons

 

POCKET GAITER

This bulky ribbed cowl gives new meaning to the phrase “yarn stash.” The tubular construction creates a

natural hiding place that is secured

with a three-button closure. It will be

just our secret!

 

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Circumference 28"/71cm

Height 8"/20.5cm

 

GAUGE

12 sts and 12 rnds= 4"/10cm over k2, p2 rib using size 13 (9mm) needle.

Take time to check gauge.

 

K2, P2 RIB

(over a multiple of 4 sts)

Rnd 1 *K2, p2; rep from * around.

Rep rnd 1 for k2, p2 rib.

GAITER

Cast on 48 sts. Pm and join, being

careful not to twist. Work in k2, p2 rib for 28"/71cm.

 

FINISHING

Buttonhole flap

Next (buttonhole) rnd Bind off 26 sts, p1, k2, p1, yo, p1, k2, p2, k1, yo, k1, p2, k2, p1, yo, p1, k2, p2. Work back and forth in rows over 22 sts as foll:

Row 1 (WS) K2, p2, ssk, k1, p2, k2, ssp, p1, k2, p2, ssk, k1, p2, k2.

Rows 2 and 4 [P2, k2] 5 times, p2.

Row 3 [K2, p2] 5 times, k2. Bind off in rib pat.

Join one end of cowl to the other, taking care not to twist tube, leaving 22 sts of buttonhole flap unsewn. Weave in ends. Sew buttons just above cast-on edge to correspond to buttonholes.
