3 (3, 4, 4, 4) skeins FABULOUS FELINES – color 1115 (Monet) # 10 ½ needles – straight or 29" circular needles, and 16" circular needles (or size needle to obtain gauge) # K-10 ½ crochet hook 2 coilless pin markers 1 large button – 1 ¼" round from Adirondack Nature Buttons, color: Bean Pot Brown
GAUGE: 15.5 sts and 20 rows over Rib Pattern = 4"
PATTERN STITCH: Rib Pattern (multiple of 4 sts + 3) Row 1 (RS): – *Knit 3, purl 1; repeat from * to last 3 sts, end knit 3. Row 2: – Knit 1, *purl 1, knit 3; repeat from * to last 2 sts, end purl 1, knit 1. Repeat these 2 rows.
NOTES: This vest is worked in one piece, from back to front. It's divided at the shoulders for the neck and fronts. Both front sections can be worked at the same time or separately. After working the shaping for the back neck edge, no further shaping is done to the neck edges for the front. The curved shape of the front is achieved when picking up stitches along the neck and front edges for the garter band.
BACK: Cast on 67 (75, 83, 91, 99) sts. Work in Rib Pattern until piece measures about 5 (5.25, 5.5, 5.75, 6)", end with a wrong side row.
ARMHOLES: Bind off 4 (4, 4, 8, 8) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows – 59 (67, 75, 75, 83) sts. Next row, knit 1, ssk, work to the last 3 sts., k2tog, knit 1 – 57 (65, 73, 73, 81) sts. Work 1 row even. Repeat the last 2 rows 3 (3, 7, 3, 7) more times – 51 (59, 59, 67, 67) sts. Work even until armhole measures 7.5 (7.75, 8, 8.25, 8.5)", end with a wrong side row.
NECK: Work 18 (21, 21, 24, 24) sts, attach a new ball of yarn and BO the next 15 (17, 17, 19, 19) sts for neck, then work to end. Each side will now be worked separately to the bottom edge of front. Bind off at each neck edge 3 sts. once, then 2 sts once – 13 (16, 16, 19, 19) sts each side. Work even and, when armhole measures 8.25 (8.5, 8.75, 9, 9.25)", place coilless markers in ends of row at armholes for shoulder.
FRONT: Work even until armhole measures about 6.25 (6.5, 5.25, 7, 5.75)" from shoulder marker, end with a wrong side row. Increase 1 st, 2 sts in from armhole edges every right side row 4 (4, 8, 4, 8) times; work new sts into pattern – 17 (20, 24, 23, 27) sts each side. When armhole measures same as back, cast on 4 (4, 4, 8, 8) sts at each armhole edge – 21 (24, 28, 31, 35) sts each side. Work even until piece measures 5 (5.25, 5.5, 5.75, 6)" from underarm cast on sts. Bind off loosely in pattern.
Lightly block vest. Sew side seams.
ARMHOLE EDGING: With circular needle and right side facing, pick up and knit 66 (68, 70, 72, 74) sts along armhole. Place marker for beginning of round. Join to work in the round. Purl 1 round. Knit 1 round, BO purlwise.
BOTTOM EDGING: With right side facing, pick up and knit 16 (18, 22, 24, 27) sts along cast on edge of right front, 57 (63, 69, 75, 81) sts along back, and 16 (18, 22, 24, 27) sts along left front – 89 (99, 113, 123, 135) sts. Work back and forth. Knit 2 rows. BO knitwise.
NECK & FRONT EDGING: With right side facing, begin at lower edge of right front. Pick up and knit 40 (42, 44, 46, 48) sts along right front, 20 (22, 22, 24, 24) sts along back neck edge, then 40 (42, 44, 46, 48) sts along left front to bottom edge – 100 (106, 110, 116, 120) sts. Work back and forth, knit 2 rows. BO knitwise but do not cut yarn. With crochet hook, use last st as beginning of chain, and chain 5 or 6. Attach to front edge about 1" above bottom edge. Fasten off. Weave in ends. Sew button to left front at inner corner of where bottom edging and front edging meet.
