Who is this book for?

You can crochet socks from the toe up using the techniques described by Kim Kotary in Learn to Crochet Socks the Toe-Up Way! Best suited for those with an intermediate level of skill, this little book walks you through all the skills you’ll need to crochet six different styles of socks. All are crocheted from the toe up with an after-though heel.

What Yarn Does it Feature?

These socks are crocheted in either sock (fingering) weight or light (DK) weight yarn. Substitutions are easy, however. The author recommends that beginners or those who want a cozy pair of slippers can substitute worsted weight yarn and hook at least two sizes smaller than the manufacturer’s recommendation. You’ll be able to complete a pair of socks in a few evenings’ time.

What's Inside

The book includes detailed instructions on custom fitting a basic crocheted sock with great tips on how to measure, type of yarns to use, which stitches stretch the best for a comfortable fit, and many more tips from the author. The author’s introduction compares crochet socks to knitted socks, describing important differences in resiliency, bias in the fabric and quantities of yarn to purchase. These tips are helpful reminders for all your crochet work.

There are five different socks styles for women and one for men in sizes small to large, each showcasing a variety of yarns, cuffs, and stitch patterns. Each design is illustrated in full color and explained with detailed step-by-step instructions.

Using It

Start with the introductory chapter of general information in which the author presents the process of crocheting socks. The author walks the reader through every step including the mathematical calculations to crochet the perfect fit sock – once you’ve completed and properly measured a tension swatch. If that makes your head hurt, the rest of the book will come to your rescue. Choose one of the six sock patterns with the math already worked out; all you need do is follow the patterns. After you have made a few pairs following the patterns word for word, you can revisit the introductory guidelines and try a design of your own. By then you’ll have gained enough skill and confidence to create your own sensational socks.

Best Pattern (or Best Advice)

The Rugged Entrelac socks designed for a man are the next best thing to argyle. Crocheted in a self-striping yarn, these socks are a whirl of color and texture. The're  great looking socks that don’t have to be for men only. Crochet the smaller size to fit a woman’s feet and choose a more feminine yarn. The girls will like these socks just as well as the guys.

Recommendation

Crocheters who want the same custom fit socks that knitters rave about will find this value-priced book ($8.95) a good investment. Crocheting socks from the toe up requires only a few balls of yarn and a minimal investment of your time.

Overall Recommendation overall 7

I rate this book #7.
