The Look

Bariloche is the medium weight yarn in the new AlsanTrends Kettle Hand Dyed Collection. It is a lightly twisted single strand yarn blended of 85% merino wool and 15% polyamide, dyed in dramatic colorways. Product information is provided on a kraft paper tag attached to the hank by a string cord. The overall impression is of a handcrafted luxury yarn. AslanTrends proclaims the Kettle Hand Dyed Collection to be an indulgence of softness, beauty and durability, and this yarn promises to be just that.

The Feel 8

Bariloche is springy, soft and fluffy. Wear this yarn right next to your skin without fear of scratchiness or itching. You can expect this springy yarn to knit into a resilient and elastic fabric – and it does.

The Patterns

Pattern books are not yet available from AslanTrends for this new yarn collection. However, you can substitute Bariloche—which knits up to an all-purpose gauge of 4 stitches per inch—with excellent results in projects that feature entrelac, modular or diagonal knitting. Utilize the hand dyed, self patterning properties of this soft and luxurious yarn to accentuate the dynamic flow of modular knits.

Color Range

The yarns in the AslanTrends Kettle Dyed Collection are hand dyed in an inspired range of colors. Bariloche is available in 11 luminous colorways. The hand made nature of the yarn means there are no dye lots, but be aware that each skein of hand dyed yarn is unique in color, even in the same dye lot, so be sure to buy enough yarn to avoid running out. Before starting your project, examine the skeins in natural light for any variations in dye absorption. If there is a noticeable difference, arrange the skeins so that the color transitions subtly and evenly throughout your garment.

Working It

barilochebarilocheBariloche is silky smooth and glides over the needles easily. You won’t have to worry about splitting this single strand yarn, and the color patterning easily hides joins. Bariloche knits into a resilient fabric with good stitch definition. This soft sturdy yarn will keep its shape and keep you warm. Set off the brilliant colors of Bariloche with just a few knit and purl stitches or with the directional changes of diagonal knitting; you can let this beautiful yarn do most of the work for you in creating interest and effect. The hand dyed colors and slightly uneven stranding create a skilled craftsman-like fabric.

What I’d Like to Make with It

To test Bariloche, I knitted a ruffled modular scarf. The color changes enlivened the textured knit, were pleasingly random and did not pool. The soft and supple fabric feels cozy and comforting around my neck. Garments or other accessories like hats, mittens, or gloves would be equally as effective in this lovely yarn.

Knitting Outside the Box

Use Bariloche as a single contrast color to simplify a Fair Isle pattern. Choose a complementary background color, and use Bariloche for the pattern color. With just one strand, you can have a brilliant display of color in the pattern rows.

Blocking It

Lay flat to dry.

Washing It

This yarn can be dry cleaned or hand washed in cool water. Not unexpectedly, some of the color did bleed from this hand dyed yarn when it was washed. This was just excess dye from the hand dye process, but it is a good reminder to wash Bariloche separately and set the color with a bit of vinegar. Despite losing some of the dye, the washed knitting did not fade and was indistinguishable from leftover strands of yarn. However, the dry clean option may be the optimal choice if you are knitting Bariloche with other yarns in your project.

Wearability

AslanTrends suggests that, with the right care, Bariloche will last forever, and there is no reason to doubt the durability of this yarn. The blend of merino and polyamide yields a strong and durable yarn. Since it is a gently twisted single strand, you may notice slight pilling, but that should be easily brushed away.

Overall Recommendation overall 9

Bariloche a soft, strong, and easy-to-knit yarn, comes in a choice of 11 luminous hand dyed colorways and has the look of a hand crafted artisanal yarn. This yarn rates a “9.”
