The Look

Wound in the ball, Filatura Di Crosa’s Baby Bubble Print looks like a puffy Sno-Cone. It is soft, airy, citrusy bright and scrumptious. This unusual yarn features chenille bumps spaced along a woven tape. The yarn is space dyed in cheerful palette of lime, purple, fuchsia and powder blue that would be attractive on a stylish baby or the young at heart. Newly released, you will find it a big improvement over other tape yarns.

The Feel 9

Baby Bubble Print is a pleasure to handle. You may get caught squeezing it, so be alert for Mr. Whipple (“don’t squeeze the Charmin”) types who may shoo you away. The chenille bumps and soft woven construction combine to create a delicately soft spongy yarn that rates a “9” on the softness scale. It looks like a stiff ribbon yarn, but feels like the soft merino from which it is woven.

The Patterns

The manufacturer has yet to release a pattern collection for this new yarn, but you can expect to see garments for youngsters that capitalize on the softness and texture of this yarn. Adults will find the color, texture and softness attractive in sweaters, scarves and shawls. Choose basic shapes that don’t require shaping, cables or textured stitches as these will not be effective in this heavily textured yarn. Perk up your business attire by knitting a simple sleeveless shell to wear under a classic blazer or jacket.

Color Range

This merino and polyamide yarn is brightly dyed in a harmonious range of cheerful complementary colors that will appeal to all ages. This joyful palette is perfect for active babies and toddlers as well as summer attire for older children and energetic adults.

Working It

Bubble PrintBubble Print produces a soft loose fabric, best suited to garter or stocking stitch. It knits into a heavily textured fabric that reveals a riot of color popping out of the nubby surface. The yarn knits easily, but is not meant for speed knitting. The tape twists and tangles a bit and the chenille bumps act somewhat as speed bumps, but Bubble Print knits up so quickly (4 stitches per inch) that speed is of little matter. For a tape yarn, Bubble Print is elastic and easy on the hands; you won’t find yourself tugging or struggling with this resilient yarn.

What I’d Like to Make with It

Using one test skein, I made a loose shoulder shawlette for summer evenings. A few more skeins would turn this pert yarn into a summer shell suitable for any body type. Unlike many tape or ribbon yarns, Bubble Print is resilient and has body. Those who dare can knit a form-fitted version, but a looser, drapier version would be just as effective. Even though the knitted fabric is heavily textured, it smoothes into a soft, moderately piled surface without adding a Michelin-Man-like dimension to your body.

Blocking It

Dry flat. Do not use heat. Because shape will probably not be critical in most garments knit from this yarn, finished projects will not need severe blocking. The knitted fabric is very elastic and resilient. It should bounce back from use without telltale stretching, bagging or sagging.

Washing It

Hand wash in cool water. Can be dry cleaned. Bubble Print did not fade, bleed, shrink or stretch with washing. It blocked easily and dried quickly. The fabric remained elastic and needed little coaxing to return to the original shape.

Wearability

Bubble Print is knit at a loose gauge of about 3 to 4 stitches per inch, and is could be easily snagged. Pulls and snags will work easily to the wrong side of this fabric, and are not a cause for concern. With a little care, garments knit from this lovely yarn will be long wearing and maintain their freshness.

Overall Recommendation overall 9

The elasticity and softness achieved with Baby Bubble Print are remarkable improvements over most ribbon or tape yarns. With it, you will be able to achieve interesting texture without sacrificing softness and elasticity. This delightful new yarn rates a “9”.
