Yarn Name: Kashmir Baby Review Date: 8/11/2009 Date Introduced to Market: Fall 2008
If you don’t know the name, you’d probably still recognize Louisa Harding’s timeless designs for Rowan Yarns and Jaeger Handknits. Her designs have been widely published in pattern books and collections. As a freelance designer, Louisa has written four books and launched her own line of fine yarns. Kashmir Baby is soft blend of merino wool with a splash of cashmere and microfiber for softness, developed to showcase Louisa’s classic designs for baby.
Louisa Harding’s Kashmir Baby is a sport weight yarn with the same chainette construction as its cousin Kashmir DK. Kashmir Baby knits up at 24 stitches/4 inches, ideal for infant and kids' projects. It is packaged in 50 gram balls of 143 yards. The smooth yarn reflects light with a bright luster. This unique fiber blend completely absorbs the dyes resulting fully saturated colors with a shimmering glow.
The Feel Kashmir Baby is a blend of merino wool, microfiber, and cashmere woven into a chainette strand that is scrumptiously soft and silky smooth. It rates a “9” on the softness scale, just right for precious infants and children.
The Patterns Bizoo Bizu #21 is a collection of 28 gorgeous designs by Louisa Harding featuring Kashmir Baby. The patterns, for babies and toddlers to 3 years, include pullovers and cardigans, hats, blankets, all with the designer’s touch. Make one or all of them just because knitting for babies is so much fun.
Fourteen new colors expand the range to 26 available colors. Fall’s new colors include deep rich tones like cocoa, jet, violet, grape, and moss that supplement traditional pastels and jewel tones. This yarn has the look, feel, and color range to make it nearly irresistible.
Working It Put away your stiletto points in favor of a blunt needle tip, or bamboo needles for working Kashmir Baby. The chainette construction of Kashmir Baby can be easily pierced with a sharp needle. Kashmir Baby, resilient and smooth, makes knitting easy. The knitted fabric is lustrous, soft, and highly resilient with excellent drape. Kashmir Baby has excellent stitch definition, necessary for Louisa Harding’s designer touches featuring little lace borders, picots, cables and ruffles.
What I’d Like to Make with It Louisa Harding’s Baby Blossom Dress and Kashmir Baby Tickle Hat are one of most charming baby sets to be found. Detailed with picot edges, embossed patterns and simple lace stitches, these adorable designs are perfect for any little girl.
Knitting Outside the Box Substitute Kashmir Baby for any sport weight yarn, including cotton. Debbie Bliss, another designer who features children’s projects, frequently uses DK weight yarns in her designs. Kashmir Baby, with its wide range of color, excellent drape and easy care may be a good choice for one of these designs.
Blocking It Dry flat. Do not tumble dry. May use cool iron to block, but avoid heat.
Washing It Machine wash in cool water on gentle cycle with minimum agitation. Place your knitting in a mesh bag or wash separately from heavy garments with buttons or zippers to prevent snagging the yarn. May be dry cleaned, but requires special treatment. Take the label with you to consult with dry cleaner over proper handling. Do not bleach.
Wearability The smooth surface of Kashmir Baby will not pill. The yarn retains its luster even after washing and blocking. This resilient yarn bounces back into shape and requires minimal blocking. Garments will not sag or bag, and will keep their shape even on a squirming baby. Overall Recommendation I recommend knitting one of Louisa Harding’s charming baby projects using Kashmir Baby’ it’s a “10.” Where to buy Louisa Harding Kashmir Baby yarn: Yarnmarket.com
