The Look

Some people say cats keep us, we don’t keep them. That may be true, because cats have figured out a way to make humans look better – by looking more like cats. Yarnmarket’s Fabulous Felines yarn is a Yarnmarket exclusive conceived with the help of fiber artist Iris Schreier of Artyarns. This quality wool chunky yarn has been hand-dyed to capture the many colors of cats. Just as “there are no ordinary cats” (Colette), this is no ordinary yarn.

The Feel 9

Fabulous Felines is as soft as a kitten. You may not be able to take your hands off this smooth bulky merino. It rates #9 on the softness scale, with #10 reserved for the real thing.

The Patterns

One winner of the Yarnmarket yarn naming contest, Lori Martz,  knit a stunning zip-front hooded sweater using Ysolda Teague's "Vivian" pattern. See how the cabled and ribbed texture stands out against the subtle variations in tone? You, too, can use Fabulous Felines in place of any bulky weight yarn. Cats wear coats of incredible variety in color and pattern. The colors swirl, shade, patch and point in an amazing variety. Just so, you can use Fabulous Felines in an endless variety of knitting patterns and style; you’ll be the cat’s pajamas!

Color Range

Find your favorite feline in the lineup of 14 colors and knit yourself a sweater or scarf to match your pet. Cream, smoke, blue point, calico and tortoise shell colors are based on photos submitted by doting cat owners. The yarns are named after the cat photographed in the winning entries. Pick a color to be a copycat to your own Valentino, Sage, or Reggae.

Amafi SampleWorking It

Fabulous describes this yarn in so many ways. The feline colors are more than an “inside joke.” First, the colors are evocative of those mesmerizing creatures we all love. Having been drawn to the yarn by the color, you’ll be hooked by the texture and softness. Twelve plies of smooth merino are spun into pairs and then into a strand of 6 plies. It has excellent stitch definition, but is light despite the bulky classification. Your knitting will feel like fluff, not a heavy weight. It doesn’t split or snag.

What I’d Like to Make with It

I’ve been experimenting with Brioche stitch after reading Nancy Marchant’s new book, Knitting Brioche the Essential Guide to the Brioche Stitch. Brioche stitch creates a deep cushiony ribbed fabric that will make you want to paddle it just as kitty kneads a nesting place. A long stretchy scarf in kitty colors will practically make you purr.

Knitting Outside the Box

Cat LoungerKnit an accessory for your cat in a custom dyed yarn to suit your cat’s coloration. How about a cozy cat bed, a catnip “mouse” or a pompon on an I-cord string? Or the Cat Lounger Cover created by Lori Martz, proud owner of Fidgesaurus Rex? Maybe you’ll just roll up a small ball of yarn; after all, anything not nailed down is a cat toy. Kitty will love you for it and may even sit in your lap.

Blocking It

Dry flat. Do not use heat.

Washing It

Machine washable on cool temperature setting.

Wearability

You can put away the cat groomer if you are worried about shedding and pilling. The long staples, tight plies and smooth surface of this yarn won’t give fur balls a chance to collect on your knitting.

Overall Recommendation overall 10

Cat lovers will knit with this soft and supple yarn regardless of what anyone recommends; for all others this yarn will rate #10.
