The Look Sirdar’s new Escape Wool Rich Chunky yarn is lofty and airy – exactly as you would wish for easy wearing comfort. Plied of 51% wool and 49% acrylic, it has the wonderful resilient qualities of wool and it’s machine washable, too. Choose Escape for sweaters, hats, scarves and accessories for the whole family.
The Feel Escape Wool Rich Chunky is soft and squeezable, and it has some muscle. It’s crushable but bounces right back into shape. Some bulky yarns are all air, but Escape Wool Rich Chunky maintains its shape and softness together. It rates an 8 on the softness scale.
The Patterns Sirdar designed some great looking sweaters, vests and accessories using Escape Wool Chunky. The variegated colorways create all the pattern you need for classic hats, scarves and sweaters. Use a shawl collar or chunky turtleneck to add flair. There’s a very “now” short bolero cardigan with wide ribbed edges and a round-neck one button cardigan that are sized for children and adults.
Color Range Ten multi shaded variegated colors knit into a mélange of near-stripes. The long color repeats create attractive transitions for hats, scarves or sweaters. The muted combinations include blues, purples, reds, and a soft subtle neutral suitable for everyone from babies on up.
Working It Escape Wool Rich Chunky knits to a gauge of 14 stitches over 4 inches on larger needles (Sirdar recommends US size 10.5). It knits very quickly and easily – no splitting or snagging from this quality yarn. Even at this relaxed gauge, you’ll get a knitted fabric with a firmly resilient tension. Ribbing, textured stitches, and garter ridges really stand up in this burly yarn. Softness is not sacrificed to rigidity; Escape Wool Rich Chunky is an amalgam of softness and strength.
What I’d Like to Make with It Sirdar masterfully united color and fiber technology in creating this practical yarn. Escape Wool Rich Chunky delivers color, body and easy care. Use it for lap robes, ponchos, or cozy jackets. This chunky yarn is strong enough to support the weight of a large outer garment without drooping or stretching. The easy care machine washability makes it a great choice for active or kids wear.
Knitting Outside the Box Try this yarn for a long scarf, stole or lap robe. The variegated colors will make even the simplest garment look special. Add color the easy way in making a Prayer Shawl in Escape Wool Chunky.
Blocking It Due to the acrylic content in this blend, do not use heat to block Escape Wool Chunky. Dry flat and do not steam to block.
Washing It Escape Wool Chunky is machine washable. Don’t get too carried away with the “easy care” label to think it means no cautions are needed. Bulky or chunky yarns will absorb a lot of water, and a large sweater or lap robe will become very water laden when machine washed. Therefore, don’t throw your hand knit garment into the laundry with the towels or sheets. Consider investing in a mesh lingerie bag to protect your knitting from abrasion which causes pilling. Using a mesh bag for your knits will also prevent stretching or tangling around other clothes during agitation. Use a gentle or delicate cycle and minimize the washing time to prevent over stretching the yarn.
Wearability Pilling occurs when short ends of fiber break away from the knitting. Escape Wool Chunky is knit to a large gauge, so there is a lot of exposed surface in each stitch that could pill. This yarn is firmly spun and does not raise a nap if lightly brushed. I think you will be pleased to find that it wears well, bounces back to shape and does not pill. Overall Recommendation For color, body and softness, choose Escape Wool Chunky. I rate this yarn #8.
