The Look

Here’s a sumptuous worsted weight 100% cotton yarn to fill all your summer knitting needs! The vivid colors of Cotton Supreme Batik knit into a stunning self-shading pattern. This easy care yarn is machine washable and dryable, too. Cotton Supreme Batik glows with the same sheen you look for in 400+ thread count premium cotton bed sheets. Compare Cotton Supreme Batik to similar cotton yarns and you’ll notice its superior sheen, softness and pliability.

The Feel 7

Cotton Supreme Batik is soft and smooth. The polished surface adds sheen and increases the feeling of softness. Batik ranks at #7 on the softness scale.

The Patterns

Designers have created a number of stylish garments specifically for Cotton Supreme, the older sibling from Universal Yarn. These designs can easily be adapted to Cotton Supreme Batik, which will add color interest to the shapely designs. Test knit the stitch pattern just to be sure detail is not obscured by the color changes. Mitered squares and diagonal knitting can be used to accentuate the natural color changes in this lovely yarn.

Color Range

Cotton Supreme batik is offered in eight multi shade combinations from tutti fruitti to somber naturals, with wonderfully descriptive names like “Waffle Cone” for the rich brown tones. Match Batik up with one of the 25 colors available in Cotton Supreme, and you’ve got a nearly unlimited palette.

Working It

When you knit any size project, whether it is a swatch or a king-sized afghan, you quickly develop a relationship with the yarn and your needles. Like friends and family, some are best experienced in short doses and you never want to leave the company of others. Cotton Supreme Batik is one of those yarns you don’t want to put down. It is “easy company.” This yarn knits smoothly; it doesn’t twist back on itself as you pull it from the center of the skein. It doesn’t split. The stitches are neat, distinct and crisp yet the knitted fabric is supple with a good drape – in short, it makes the knitter look talented and skilled. The lustrous finish wasn’t destroyed with knitting, either. Even the dark walnut brown sections in my sample retained a glow, highlighting each stitch.

What I’d Like to Make with It

Lately I have been pondering the log cabin quilt pattern and think it might be interesting to experiment with this idea using Cotton Supreme Batik. I’m wondering how the color changes will work out in the natural changes of color and direction in the log cabin pattern. Using this yarn would be a less controlled method of getting color change than the careful piecing and planning that goes into the log cabin, but who likes to be controlled. Quilters may have a different opinion, but I think it worth at least a dishcloth-sized swatch. I know for certain that this soft 100% cotton yarn will make a dandy dishcloth, and I may learn something about the log cabin for my effort.

Knitting Outside the Box

Cotton Supreme Batik Pattern Cotton Supreme Batik Pattern

Universal’s Cotton Kids book features colorful sweaters for kids knit in Cotton Supreme, the solid color companion to Cotton Supreme Batik. Imagine these cool cats knit in stripey Cotton Batik – knit a cuddly tiger, calico or tuxedo cat just for the fun of it. If you just can’t wait to get started, there’s a free pattern from Universal for three cute dollies, any of which would be just as cute in Cotton Batik.

Blocking It

Machine dryable or lay flat to dry.

Washing It

Machine washable in medium temperature water with a small amount of mild soap.

Wearability

Soft as it is, this yarn does not shed fibers. The friction of knitting Cotton Supreme Batik did not cause fibers to break away and rise to the surface. Consequently, it won’t turn into a terry towel after one or two wearings. You can expect this yarn to wear well if you treat it properly.

Overall Recommendation overall 10

Enough said. This is a great medium weight cotton yarn. You should try it. I rate it #10.
