The Look Sublime Yarns is a new luxury fiber line created by Sirdar, a well-established British line renowned for its extensive library of fashionable pattern designs developed to support their fine hand knitting yarns. Knitting and wearing a garment using these yarns can only be described as Sublime. Cashmere Merino Silk DK is an exquisite blend of extra fine merino, cashmere and silk using only the best quality of Himalayan cashmere. It is soothingly soft and luxuriously silky. The beautiful, understated colors add to the allure of this finely crafted Italian yarn.
The Feel This soothingly delicate, soft, and smooth yarn is the gentlest natural blend next to your baby's skin. It rates #10 on the softness scale.
The Patterns The Sixth Little Hand Knit Book by Sublime is filled with charming ideas for beautiful babies. It has 18 mini sweaters, vests and booties for boys and girls, all knit in Sublime Cashmere Merino Silk DK. Most of these garments require only a few balls of yarn. For bigger girls and gals, the styles in the Sublime Double Knitting Book are just as compelling. Here, you’ll find cardigans, slippers, hats and shrugs that show off this luxury yarn. Sublime has published several other books, which you should check out. You’ll find some of the dearest baby shoes and hats in this collection.
Color Range Cashmere Merino Silk DK has been created in 26 adorable baby shades, including four new colors for 2010.
Working It Cashmere Merino Silk DK is sublime in so many ways, including the knitting. As you would expect, it feels great slipping over the fingers. When yarn is exceptionally soft, as this yarn is, we tend to expect the stitches will flatten out into mush with no noticeable shape. Not so with Cashmere Merino Silk DK. The stitches maintain their shape and the yarn has a lot of body, making it a good choice for hats that rely on elasticity for a snug comfortable fit. Garter stitch is dense and springy; stockinette is smooth and straight. The purl bumps stand out boldly from the flat stockinette surface, giving you an ideal surface for applying textured stitches.
What I’d Like to Make with It I’d like to make anything with this yarn, especially baby garments, even though there are no babies on my gift list right now. This yarn is so special that you can knit something for a “hope chest” or how about knitting a preemie hat or two to donate to a local hospital? Imagine how caressing a hat or surplice knit in this sublimely soft yarn would feel to a fragile preemie.
Knitting Outside the Box Try Cashmere Merino Silk DK in a pair of wristlets or fingerless gloves. You know you want to handle this yarn as much as you can, so why not knit something to wear on your hands? Heck, knit some fingerless gloves and wear them while you’re knitting. What could be more luxurious or more “knitterly!"
Blocking It Lay flat. “Reshape whilst wet.” Isn’t the English language elegant when practiced by the Brits?
Washing It Hand wash. This is a delicate premium fiber. Treat it as such.
Wearability One is tempted to say, "Who cares how well it wears when a single wearing brings so much pleasure that you’ll remember it for a long time?" However, fine yarn can and should be durable. Why not wear this silky soft yarn every day? Silk and cashmere are rare “exotic” fibers that you may think should be reserved for special occasions only, but this yarn will withstand normal use and you will be the happier for wearing it. Overall Recommendation You must try this yarn, even if it’s only one ball for a pair of baby bootees. It is a winner. I rate it #10.
