The Look

Cocoon is a novel yarn made of plushy slubs joined together by a woven cord.  It is so soft that you may mistake the plush slubs for marshmallows.  This yarn promises a pumped version of the texture in your grandmother’s chenille bedspread.  You will be drawn to Cocoon, if only by curiosity, wondering whatever you could knit with it. The brilliant multi tones and deeply dyed plain shades will assure you that fun and fashion will be your reward.

The Feel 10

Cocoon is so extraordinarily soft and plush that it feels like holding a cloud.  This yarn is a “10” on the softness scale.

The Patterns

Free scarf patterns in either crochet or knitting are available for this yarn.  Take advantage of these patterns, which are an excellent introduction into working with Cocoon.  You can use Cocoon in any pattern worked at a super bulky gauge.  However, keep in mind that because Cocoon is not very resilient, it is best used in loose, flowing projects that don’t require form fitting.  Avoid projects with strong ribbing or fitted elements.  Instead, choose simple boxy shapes.

Color Range

Cocoon is available in six delicious multicolor ranges and 13 deeply saturated solids.  The colors are bright and bold – the perfect complement to this saucy yarn.

Working It

cocoonCocoon takes just a bit of adjustment in working.  The free scarf instructions that accompany the yarn are very helpful.   With a little practice, even beginners should be able to handle this yarn.  Surprisingly, the yarn rips back without knotting or snagging on the slubs, so mistakes can be corrected with ease.

Casting on is best accomplished by backward loops anchored by one slip knot.  The yarn can be knit on needles as small as size 8 or up to about a size 13.  The stitches are formed on the cable between the slubs.  As many as two stitches can be knit between the slubs using size 8 needles, whereas only one stitch can be knit using larger needles.  For an even looser gauge, skip an occasional slub and let it dangle loosely in the fabric.

What I’d Like to Make with It

There is not a lot of elasticity in Cocoon, but the yarn is so soft and cuddly that you want to snuggle into it, making this an ideal yarn for a long scarf or cowl collar.  Alternatively, use Cocoon to embellish the collar and/or cuffs of a plain cardigan, jacket, or mittens.  A shoulder shawl, triangle scarf, or triangle shawl are also possibilities.  Whatever your choice, you will feel much pampered with Cocoon next to your skin.

Give a baby a hug by knitting up a superfast baby cushion in a small size to use in the car seat or stroller.  Cocoon’s bright colors, ultra softness, and light as a feather qualities make it an ideal yarn for quick washable baby projects.

Knitting Outside the Box

Use two natural shades of Cocoon to knit up a chic “chinchilla” jacket or poncho.  When knit in garter stitch, Cocoon approximates the depth and softness of fur.

Choose Cocoon to cover a floor or bed pillow for your teenager who wants a bright and cozy accent to personalize their bedroom.  The color range is wide enough to suit either boys or girls and should blend with most team colors.  Better yet, teach your teens to knit and encourage them to knit a pillow themselves.

Artists yearning for self expression through fiber art will find cocoon an intriguing resource.  Combine Cocoon with other fibers for a one-of-a-kind lap robe, bed throw, or ultimate in softness bath mat.

Knit up a pair of luxuriously soft and feminine house slippers (but stay off slippery wood floors with this polyester fiber).

Blocking  It

Do not use heat on this polyester yarn.  Dry flat or dry clean.

Washing It

Cocoon can be machine washed at low temperature.  Dry flat.

Wearability

Despite its super bulky categorization, Cocoon is exceptionally light and marshmallow-y in weight.  It will not pill but may crush.  Give it a gentle shake to re-plump.

Overall Recommendation overall 10

Stretch yourself into new dimensions by choosing Cocoon for a fun and fast project.  Treat yourself to a bit of fun and serendipity with this fun and well constructed yarn.  You will find quick and certain results plus a bit of adventure in knitting with Cocoon – it rates a “10.”
